Work-related stress, absence and prevention

Healthy workplaces combine prevention, good management, caring communication and timely access to support.

Work-related stress can affect concentration, confidence, communication, health, performance and attendance. In Great Britain, stress, depression or anxiety accounted for an estimated 22.1 million working days lost in 2024/25.

Prevention comes first

Employers should assess work-related stress risks and address demands, control, support, relationships, role and organisational change. Individual relaxation support is valuable, but it should not be used to shift responsibility for preventable workplace pressures onto employees.

CBRT™ workplace development

In April 2005, Alison Bourne was invited to speak at the International Stress Management Association conference in London, where CBRT and the use of the Colour Breathing Disks were demonstrated. Several ISMA members subsequently trained as CBRT Practitioners.

The Programme has been used as a practical self-help and Practitioner-led relaxation approach for office and home workers. Its visual presence is non-tactile and designed to sit comfortably within a workplace environment.

A future organisational pathway

From 2027, CBRT™ is intended to provide an additional human-led, person-centred first-tier option within wider mental-health, occupational-health and workplace-wellbeing arrangements.

Future implementation shall include trained Practitioners, voluntary participation, confidentiality, clear professional boundaries, appropriate referral and outcome review.

Practical support for office, hybrid and home-based workers

Work-related stress, depression and anxiety continue to have a serious human and organisational impact. In 2024/25, an estimated 964,000 workers in Great Britain experienced work-related stress, depression or anxiety. These conditions accounted for approximately 22.1 million working days lost—an average of 22.9 days for each person affected.

CBRT™ offers organisations a human-led, person-centred approach to relaxation and first-tier mental-health support. Using the seven uniquely designed Colour Breathing Disks©, conscious breathing and caring communication, CBRT™ helps people pause, focus, communicate and relax.

Its visual, non-tactile format makes CBRT™ suitable for office and workplace settings. Once the technique has been learned through professionally delivered support, participants can also continue using their CBRT™ relaxation skills while working from home.

CBRT™ can complement an organisation’s existing workplace mental-health and wellbeing provision. It provides a practical way to encourage:

  • Open and caring communication
  • Calmness and time for reflection
  • Focus and concentration
  • Positive thinking
  • Greater awareness of other people’s feelings
  • A more person-centred working environment

From 2027, organisations will be able to access services delivered by a CBRT™ Practitioner or train members of their own team to provide regular, in-house and person-centred CBRT™ Relaxation Support Sessions®.

“The ability to relax is vital when dealing with the issue of stress. CBRT is a powerful new tool for the user, working at many levels.”
